The lucky villager who discovered it in a riverbed gave it to De Beers. The diamond cutter would take years to decide on the size. In the end, the Millennium Star is an incredibly beautiful pear-shaped diamond of 203.03 carats . Many experts cite it as the most beautiful diamond in the world. The Millennium Star is the centerpiece of De Beers' Limited Edition Millennium Diamonds collection.

4. The Moussaieff Red Diamond: the rarest diamond?

The Moussaieff Red Diamond may be "only" 5.11 carats. However, it is the largest cut red diamond in the world . This is because its red diamonds are the rarest. When it was discovered in 1989, the rough of 13.9 carats was purchased by the Wiliam Goldberg Diamond Corp. After a triangular brilliant cut, the stone was named Red Shield. In the early 2000s, the diamond would become the Moussaieff Red Diamond, named after its purchaser.

5. The Cullinan I

The Cullinan Diamond , the world's largest gem-quality diamond ever found, was discovered in the Premier Mine in 1905. The rough diamond was nearly flawless. It was named the Cullinan after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the founder of the mine, who happened to be visiting the mine on the day of its discovery. Louis Botha, Prime Minister of the Transvaal, persuaded the government to purchase the diamond for about $1 million. It was presented to King Edward VII of England in gratitude for granting the Transvaal its own constitution.

The enormous diamond was cut into nine main gemstones (pictured) and 96 minor stones. The two largest diamonds were saved for the British Crown Jewels: the Cullinan I and II. The pendant-cut Cullinan I diamond weighs a whopping 530.2 carats . However, it is no longer the largest cut diamond in the world, as the Cullinan was dethroned in 1992 by the Thai King's Golden Jubilee Diamond.

6. The Jubilee Diamond

The Jubilee Diamond was discovered by employees of the Jagersfontein mine in 1895. In its rough state, it weighed 650.80 carats. Originally named the Reitz Diamond, it was the second largest diamond in the world at the time. Today, it is the sixth largest diamond ever discovered. The Jubilee was cut into two massive diamonds of exceptional colour, clarity and brilliance. The larger of the two diamonds was named the Jubilee in honour of the sixteenth anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation. The stone was subsequently purchased by a group of London diamond dealers.

7. The Pink Star Diamond: the most beautiful pink diamond

This stone, not to be confused with the Williamson Pink Star , is one of the most beautiful diamonds in the world due to its rare, bright pink color. The stone also benefits from exceptional purity. It was discovered in South Africa in 1999. As is the case with all exceptional rough stones, the cutting took almost 2 years to complete. The Pink Star diamond was presented with great pomp in Monaco in 2003 during a public ceremony.

And when it was sold in 2013, the Pink Star diamond set the record for the world's most expensive diamond ever sold ($83 million with commission). Unfortunately, the buyer backed out. Sotheby's found a buyer 4 years later for just over $ 71 million .

8. The Golden Jubilee Diamond

The Golden Jubilee is the largest faceted diamond in the world . It beats the Cullinan I by just over 3 g with a total weight of no less than 545.67 carats . It was discovered in 1985 in the famous Premier mine in South Africa. The rough weighed 755.5 carats. Due to internal cracks, its cutting was a real challenge. De Beers had to use innovative techniques to complete the cutting, which took 2 years. A special underground room without vibration was even built.

Belgian Gabriel Tolkowsky, who also crafted the famous 273.85-carat Centenary Diamond, also worked on this one. A group of Thai businessmen led by entrepreneur Henry Ho purchased the Golden Jubilee from De Beers. The King of Thailand in 1997 received it as a gift for the 50th anniversary of his coronation. Hence its name Golden Jubilee.

9. The Incomparable

This magnificent diamond comes from Africa, but not from the South. Weighing 407.48 carats, the Incomparable is the third largest diamond ever cut. Only the Cullinan 1 and the Golden Jubilee, already mentioned, precede it. The Incomparable lives up to its name. This gigantic diamond is also remarkable for its perfect internal clarity, its unusual triangular shape, called a "triolette", and its original brownish-yellow colour. The Incomparable was discovered in the Mbuji Mayi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

10. The Centenary Diamond

The Centenary Diamond was located in July 1986 in the Premier Mine using X-rays. After this exceptional discovery, only a handful of people were informed, and kept in secrecy. In its raw form, the stone had a very irregular shape. Its size therefore represented a real headache for its owners.

De Beers unveiled the Centenary Diamond, the world's second largest flawless diamond , on the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary in 1988. Weighing 273.85 carats, the stone is remarkable for its many facets. The famous Premier mine of the De Beers group thus added a new exceptional diamond to its list of achievements. It is indeed from this mine that other legendary diamonds such as the Cullinan and the Heart of Eternity come.
