Georges Braque

A Unique Creation: The Work of Georges Braque and Heger de Löwenfeld

The jewelry of Georges Braque, created between 1961 and 1963, represents a unique collaboration between the painter Georges Braque and the diamond dealer Heger de Löwenfeld. This innovative collection transforms Braque's gouaches into precious jewelry, combining art and jewelry in an unprecedented way.

Braque, famous for his role in Cubism, utilized his later years to explore new forms of artistic expression. Tired yet inspired, he began to create gouaches that would later be transformed into jewelry. These creations were primarily made between 1962 and 1963, during a time when Braque continued to paint despite his illness.

The Gouaches and Their Transformation into Jewelry

Georges Braque began in September 1961 with three-dimensional drawings, including a Greek Head, which he entrusted to Heger de Löwenfeld for shaping. In total, 110 gouaches created by Braque served as the basis for these jewels, which were created and exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in the spring of 1963.

Recurring themes in Braque's gouaches include flying birds and figures inspired by Greek mythology. These motifs were faithfully reproduced in the jewelry, such as brooches, necklaces, and rings, capturing the essence of Braque's works while showcasing their beauty as precious objects.

The Legacy of Braque and Heger de Löwenfeld

After Braque's death in 1963, Heger de Löwenfeld continued to create jewelry inspired by the painter's gouaches until his own death in 1996. The posthumous pieces are often signed by Löwenfeld, clearly distinguishing the original creations from those produced afterward.

These pieces are now displayed in several prestigious museums, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Georges Braque Museum in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges.
