Mikimoto, the Elegance of Luxury Pearls

The story of Mikimoto begins with Kōkichi Mikimoto, a Japanese pioneer in the world of pearls. In 1893, Mikimoto and his wife achieved a remarkable feat by cultivating the world’s first semi-spherical pearls. Following his wife’s passing, Kōkichi retired from his restaurant to fully dedicate himself to his passion for pearls.

In 1899, he opened his first store in Ginza, Tokyo, an area renowned for its Western fashion brands. The quality and design of his pearls quickly attracted an international clientele. To further expand, Mikimoto sent family members to the United States while continuing his research to perfect his jewelry designs, particularly necklaces. In 1913, he opened a boutique in London, marking the beginning of his global expansion.

The Excellence of Mikimoto Pearls

By 1924, Mikimoto was recognized as the most prestigious jeweler in Japan. Experts often cannot distinguish cultured pearls from natural ones, which only increased his determination. His efforts were rewarded with several distinctions, including the Diamonds International Award in 1969. Mikimoto's reputation continues to grow, with increasing demand for his creations.
