Chanel Camélia Jewelry: Characteristics in a Nutshell
The camellia flower, with its geometric patterns, is particularly well-suited for jewelry use. It can either create very feminine jewelry with floral inspiration or inspire more abstract pieces. In the 1920s, Coco Chanel developed a passion for camellias. The story goes that it was the bouquet offered by Arthur Capel that sparked her love at first sight, although other sources suggest its origins date back to her childhood.
This curious flower, scentless, thornless, and of great symmetrical perfection, was frowned upon due to its androgynous nature. These characteristics intrigued Coco Chanel and fueled her quest for provocation.
However, it was in 1933 that this flower made its debut in Chanel fashion collections. And the first Chanel Camélia jewel would be a transparent glass necklace created by the Gripoix workshops in 1938.
