The House of Sanz: An Institution of Spanish Haute Jewelry

Founded in 1854 by Philippe Sanz, the House of Sanz is a cornerstone of Spanish haute jewelry. Located at 36 Calle Montera in Madrid, it began as a traditional jewelry business. Philippe Sanz had the honor of working for the Spanish royal family, creating remarkable pieces such as an emerald necklace for Queen Victoria Eugenie, inspired by her godmother, Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III.

A Rich History and Royal Legacy

In 1912, the House of Sanz underwent renovations, moving to 29 Calle Montera under the direction of Philippe's sons, Juan and Luis. A split in 1918 saw Juan retain the name Sanz and the original shop, while Luis opened his own jewelry store. The house quickly became the official supplier to the Spanish royal family, confirming its status with luxurious and elegant creations.

Sanz Jewelry: Refined and Coveted Pieces

The House of Sanz is renowned for its opulent jewelry, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, and earrings. These pieces are often made of yellow gold and adorned with diamonds as well as precious and semi-precious stones like rubies, turquoise, and amethyst. Sanz creations are particularly prized for their colorful aesthetics and substantial forms, attracting discerning Spanish clientele in the 20th century.

Valuation and Pricing of Sanz Jewelry

Today, Sanz jewelry is highly sought after in the art market. While less common than pieces from other major houses, they can fetch interesting prices. For instance, in 2021, an enamel, ruby, and diamond set sold for €6,300 at Sotheby’s Paris, while in 2020, a pair of diamond drop earrings reached nearly €45,000 at Bonhams London.
