Simple tips for estimating the value of vintage jewelry
Here are some simple tips to help you estimate the value of vintage jewelry yourself.
Punching
Hallmarking, a mark left on the jewelry by the jeweler, provides valuable information about the piece, including its creator and its precious metal content (for example, 18K means 18-carat gold).
It can be found on the inside of a vintage ring or antique bracelet, on the clasp of a long necklace, etc. Major brands like Cartier or Tiffany & Co. still use hallmarks. See, in particular, this example of a Chanel hallmark.
A Boivin bracelet may have a hallmark from a renowned workshop, for example Dumont & Compagnie.
Magnet test
Take a magnet and place it near your vintage jewelry. If it's costume jewelry, the magnet will attract it. If it's valuable, it won't.
Acid test
By rubbing the jewelry on an abrasive material such as a stone and applying acid, you can determine the gold, silver, or platinum content of an antique piece. Kits are available online for doing this yourself at home, but be careful when handling it!
How to determine if diamonds are real ? There are several simple tricks to tell if the stones in vintage earrings or a vintage brooch are diamonds or not. The magnifying glass test, which should reveal imperfections, is one of them.

The simplest solution: an expert appraisal of antique jewelry
While there are a few simple methods to get an idea of the value of antique jewelry, it's a vast field that only experts truly master. Besides the intrinsic value of the piece, which is determined by the metals and stones used, many other factors come into play.
- When was the piece of jewelry made?
- How rare is it?
- Which house or craftsman made it?
- What is the market demand…
All these parameters play an important role in the evaluation of a vintage jewelry.
You can, of course, do your own research to try to determine the period of a piece of jewelry, its origin, and attempt to estimate its price based on similar pieces. But if you wish to sell vintage jewelry easily and without hassle, you can simply request an appraisal from Miller. We offer you two options:
