THE 4 C'S

The quality and value of a diamond are determined by four criteria: the carat, i.e. the weight of the diamond, the color, which divides the diamonds on a scale from the whitest to the yellow-brown, the purity, which raises the question of internal inclusions and surface imperfections of the stone, and the cut, corresponding to the symmetry and proportion of the diamond, but also to its cut shape: brilliant, pear, cushion, princess, etc. All of these elements, applicable only to diamonds, are called the "4Cs" in reference to the English translation of these terms: carat, color, clarity, and cut. A certificate issued by a gemological laboratory (GIA, HRD, LFG, etc.) will assure you of the qualities of the diamond. However, an expert eye can, especially if the diamond is not mounted, give you an idea of its color and purity. Our team members will be happy to look at your stone to give you an initial opinion.

Carat

The carat (abbreviated as “ct”) of a diamond corresponds to its weight. You should know that one gram corresponds to 0.20 carats (we can speak of 20 hundredths or 20 points). The term “carat” finds its origin in the fruit of the carob tree, the “carob”. This fruit with a regular weight of 0.2 grams was used as a unit of weight measurement in the gold trade.

Although a diameter can give an idea of the carat weight of your stone, be careful: an "effect" stone, i.e. cut with a wide table and a shallow culet, will give you the illusion of a stone with a high carat weight through its diameter, while the true weight could surprise you!
